HAVE A FLEXIBLE SQUAD
This comes in two parts:
- First, ensure you have a spread of price points across each of your positions. This will enable you to respond instantly when the ‘must-have’ options present themselves, irrespective of their price and position.
- Second, keep £0.5m ITB. This was a game changer for me last season. If you have £0.5m in your pocket, you gain immunity from the initial price changes. You can get your target in, without ripping up your squad.
USE A ‘SAME TEAM’ GK PAIRING
GKs are the weakest position for points generation, so your focus should be preserving budget and being able to set and forget the position. The best way to do this is to have a cheap and cheerful GK combination from the same team this has a number of advantages:
- If your main keeper gets injured, you have guaranteed cover without using a transfer
- If a team rotates their GKs, you are still covered
- It’s great for saving precious budget (backup GKs for lesser teams are £4m)
- The cheaper GKs tend to generate more save/bonus points
DON’T TAKE CHANCES ON EXPENSIVE, UNPROVEN ASSETS
One of the most exciting aspects of a new season is welcoming the new signings and seeing how they are priced, but this is a dangerous juncture for your GW1 squad wait to see how the player adapts to the Premier League before investing.
Owners of Timo Werner last season were burned by his failure to instantly adapt to his new environment. If a new player instantly clicks, you can always bring him in.
TARGET THE FIXTURE ‘SWEET SPOT’
If you build your team around GW1, then you may get off to a big start, but you may also spend the next four gameweeks falling behind. Likewise, don’t omit a player because they hit a bad patch of fixtures in GW7; there’s plenty of time between now and then to make adjustments.
I like to target GWs 1–6 for my initial squad.
DO YOUR RESEARCH
One of the most powerful things you can do to get off to a good start is to identify the cheap, in-form assets (particularly those who are being played OOP).
Not only will they generate points, but they will free up budget to upgrade a mid-range or premium asset. To do this, you will have to do some detailed pre-season analysis.
I had never heard of John Lundstram prior to the 2019/20 season, but he was in my GW1 squad because I did my homework.
